Prerequisites

As indicated in the Course Prospectus, students wishing to take this exam must have taken the Placemnt test and have an A2 level of competence in the language. Activities (AAL) of Remedial work are offered to students whose level of competence is below A2 in the course of the academic year (see the webpage of our Centro Competenza Lingue: https://ccl.unibg.it/it).

Educational goals

In line with the objectives of the Course, students will improve their communicative, expressive and argumentative skills in English - B1 (Threshold) level, and will acquire metalinguistic awareness of the main features of Standard English and its use in both oral and written communication.

Course content

After a general overview of pragmatic issues in contemporary English, the course aims to illustrate the main strategies employed when communicating in different contexts and across cultures, taking into consideration aspects like informativeness, effectiveness, persuasion and politeness.

Teaching methods

Classes will consist in lectures, where students are expected to have an active role in discussing the content being presented and suggesting ways of dealing with it.

Students have also access to applied language activities (AAL) at B1 level and tutoring support (information about such activities can be found at the Centro Competenza Lingue webpage).

Assessment and Evaluation

Written test + oral exam

The written test and the oral exam may be taken only at the end of the course. In order to take the oral exam, students will have to pass the written test.
The written part of the exam is a 30+15 min. computerized test which measures the skills acquired during the AAL: the first part (30 min.) tests skills like listening, reading, use of English; the second part (15 min.) tests translation skills (lexis, morpho-syntax) - through multiple choice and cloze type exercises.
The result of the computerized test (pass / fail) will be communicated to students a few days (1-2) after the date of the test.

The oral exam consists in two interrelated parts:
- testing of the students’ linguistic and communicative skills (i.e. through the translation of short sentences)
- discussion (in English) of the contents of the course (see reference texts in Leganto): questions are intended to verify the student’s competence as to the course content (notions, principles, models, strategies and their use in practical contexts)
The grading will be based on 1) linguistic correctness, 2) clarity and coherence, and 3) competence as to the course content (in terms of precision and exhaustiveness).

Further information

Should the course be taught as a blended or online activity, some adjustments (with respect to what stated in the syllabus) may be necessary – and will be indicated on the course page – in order to make the course and the exams more easily accessible.

Relevant information about practice sessions (AAL) - i.e. syllabus, course books, etc. - may be found here: https://www.unibg.it/studia-noi/ti-aiutiamo/apprendimento-linguistico/in...

Students with a B1 certificate obtained in the last 5 years should present it to the Segreteria Studenti in order to get the exemption from parts of the exam, as indicated on the CCL webpage (https://ccl.unibg.it/it).
