Educational goals

Critical awareness of the problems and methods of textual criticism. With textual criticism we refer to all the techniques used to provide the reader with the most reliable text; this is accomplished through a close evaluation of all the textual tradition of the work as we received it.

Course content

Introduction to textual criticism. For a brief description of the purpose and methods of textual criticism see the presentation of the "Obiettivi formativi" above.
Contents will also be discussed in a teaching perspective, so as to provide opportunities for further analyses.

Teaching methods

Lectures. It will be appreciate the intervention of the students (requests for clarification and invitations to deepen).

Assessment and Evaluation

Discussion of the topics treated during the course. A first question will cover key aspects of the "so called lachmannian method" (and any objections made against it).
Followed by a question about a textual problem presented during the course (or from reference books), generally offered by Renaissance or medieval texts.
To obtain a positive grade students need to know the different philological methods of text analysis; they must be able to place the texts analyzed during the course in their historical ad cultural context, and know the main elements of the bibliographical material. To obtain a highly positive grade students have to show indepth knowledge of the texts analyzed during the course, commenting them from a linguistic and a philological point of view, also on the basis of the bibliographical material. To obtain an excellent grade students have to show an organic view of the topics discussed in class, to be able to use sources and bibliographical material, link topics, and master expressive skills.
