Gli studenti saranno messi in condizione di padroneggiare nelle sue linee essenziali lo sviluppo storico della cultura classica, per quanto attiene a) ai contesti storici di riferimento b) alla trasmissione diretta e indiretta dei testi c) alla ricezione e rielaborazione del patrimonio culturale dell’antichità. Gli studenti saranno inoltre messi in grado di leggere le edizioni “critiche” dei testi cogliendone le tecniche essenziali. La particolare attenzione dedicata alla produzione letteraria bizantina consentirà di comprendere il suo indispensabile ruolo di irraggiamento culturale attraverso i secoli non solo come “deposito” o “imitazione” di conoscenze e tecniche antiche ma anche come “laboratorio” innovativo verso il Rinascimento da un lato e il mondo slavo dall’altro, specie grazie all’elaborazione del dogma cristiano.
Il corso è articolato in due parti. Nella prima si introducono le modalità
di produzione, trasmissione e conservazione dei testi (con i loro presupposti materiali e le loro implicazioni storiche e culturali)
nell’antichità classica e poi nel Medioevo bizantino e occidentale. Vengono inoltre forniti cenni in merito alla ricezione moderna dei testi e alla tecnica filologica. La seconda
parte del corso si dedica alla letteratura bizantina sia in quanto continuatrice della tradizione classica (per es. nella storiografia) sia quale laboratorio di nuove forme letterarie, con particolare attenzione all'influsso del Cristianesimo (per es. nella produzione agiografica).

La prova orale è un dialogo non limitato ad aspetti nozionistici ma volto ad approfondire la capacità dello studente di pensare criticamente e di esprimersi correttamente alla luce della specificità tecnica del corso.
Qualora l'insegnamento venisse impartito in modalità mista o a distanza potranno essere introdotte modifiche rispetto a quanto dichiarato nel syllabus per rendere il corso e gli esami fruibili anche secondo queste modalità.

A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF GREEK AND LATIN LANGUAGES IS NECECESSARY. RECOMMENDED ARE THE COURSES "CIVILIZATION OF THE EASTERN ROMANS" AND "MEDIAEVAL HISTORY".
Students will be able to master the historical development of classical culture in its essential lines, as regards a) the historical contexts of reference, b) the direct and indirect transmission of texts, c) the reception and reworking of the cultural heritage of antiquity. Students will also be able to read the "critical" editions of the texts after an introduction to their essential techniques. A particular attention will be devoted to the Byzantine literary production, allowing students to understand its indispensable role of cultural radiation through the centuries. Byzantine literature will therefore be understood not only as a "deposit" or an "imitation" of ancient knowledges and techniques but also as an innovative "laboratory" towards the Renaissance on the one hand and the Slavic world on the other, especially thanks to the elaboration of the Christian dogma.
The course is divided into two parts. The first introduces the modalities
of production, transmission and conservation of texts (with their material assumptions and their historical and cultural implications)
in classical antiquity and then in the Byzantine and Western Middle Ages. Notes on the modern reception of texts and the philological technique are also provided. The second
part of the course is dedicated to Byzantine literature both as a continuator of the classical tradition (e.g. in historiography) and as a laboratory of new literary forms, with particular attention to the influence of Christianity (e.g. in hagiographic production).
Lectures (with information about 'how to' properly read course texts), seminars with authors and experts (max 4 hours), PPT projections and discussion of literary passages. Most relevant among them to be published in my home page, as exam subjects for all intents and purposes.
My oral test is a dialogue with the student. It does not limit itself to verifying significant names, dates, places in the period under study but aims at deepening the student's ability to think critically and to express him-/herself correctly, especially in the light of the technical implications of the course.
Should it be necessary to teach in "mixed mode" or remotely, changes could affect this syllabus in order to make course and exams accessible accordingly.
