Students will acquire knowledge and skills related to healthcare process management in terms of modeling, simulation and optimisation techniques. The course of simulation techniques in healthcare processes (MOD2) can be attended as a single course or integrated with the healthcare operations course (MOD1).
1.SIMULATION TECHNIQUES AND THEIR APPLICATION
• Principles of simulative methods: discrete and continous, static and dynamic, deterministic and stochastic.
• Application of the simulative techniques.
• Examples in the healthcare sector (taking into account limited resources, e.g. personnel, money, time, equipment).
2.INTRODUCTION TO THE SIMULATION SOFTWARE (FlexSim)
• Description of the simulation software.
• Mode and type of data to be provided in INPUT.
• Mode and type of data given in OUTPUT (e.g. type of extractable data).
Implementation of simulation models to the Alpha Case.
Simulation of hospital processes (e.g. management of a department, operating room, booking center, laboratories for analysis) or other areas in the health environment.
3.CRITERIA FOR PROCESS OPTIMIZATION
• Analysis of input variability effects and process execution times.
• Sensitivity analysis.
• Process improvement (use of quality tools, e.g. cause-effect, etc.)
• Risk analysis and FMEA techniques.
Application of optimization models to the Alpha Case.
Meet the practitioners: discussing about healthcare practical experiences and solutions.

Assignment development
The final exam consists of a written test (2 or 3 theoretical questions) and a practical test (modeling of a process using the Flexsim software). The two parts have approximately equal value.
In addition, students can develop an optional assignment that will contribute to the final grade with an additional score.
For students attending both modules, there will be a single written exam and a single assignment development.
If the teaching is taught in mixed mode or remotely, changes can be made with respect to what stated in the syllabus to make the course and the exams suitable for this mode.
