The course aims at training professionals in the field of energy efficiency. Participants will learn about choosing the best combination of conventional and renewable energy solutions as well as sizing the hybrid energy systems to comply with the end-user requirements in industrial, commercial and residential environments. Furthermore, control strategies will be implemented for a sustainable and efficient production and delivery of energy, heat and cooling.
This course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to design and manage CCHP plants combined with renewable technologies. The performance metrics that are capable to identify costs and benefits will be defined for energy, environmental and techno-economic assessment, under complex interactions among plant components. After a short introduction on the basic concepts of Thermodynamics, the course goes into detail on:
ointernal combustion engines
oRankine cycle - Organic Rankine Cycle
ogas turbines (micro-turbines)
-Renewable energy technologies
obioenergy and waste-to-energy
ogeothermal heat pumps
osolar water heating
-Energy storage systems
-CCHP (Combined Cooling Heating Power) solutions
-design guidance (layout, sizing, interconnection among components)
-environmental and techno-economic assessment
The course includes theoretical lessons (48 hours) and practical lessons (24 hours). During practical lessons, students will apply the knowledge in a project-based learning experience. Case studies will be analyzed to reveal best practices. Multi-energy systems will be modeled by means of TRNSYS (TRaNsient SYstem Simulation Program) to simulate realistic operating conditions, while searching for optimized control strategies.
Exam will consist of two parts:
-written theory test (4 questions; score is expressed in thirtieths)
-practical modeling test using TRNSYS (positive or negative result)
If the course is taught in mixed mode or remotely, changes can be made compared to what is stated in the syllabus to make the course and exams usable also in these ways.
