Educational goals

After completing the module, students will have improved their philological skills: they will have acquired theoretical and methodological tools to understand, analyze and interpret the linguistic evolution and changes found in literary texts of different ages.

Course content

After a general introduction on the general concepts of diachronic language change, the course will focus on the evolution of Spanish, analyzed through literary texts. Particular attention will be given to classical and modern Spanish.
More specifically, the module will explore:
1. Basic concepts and definitions.
2. Notes on Primitive Spanish (IX-XI centuries) and Archaic Spanish (XI-XII).
3. Alfonso X El Sabio and his linguistic heritage (XIII-XIV).
4. From medieval Spanish to classic Spanish (XV)
5. Spanish in the Golden Age (ss. XVI-XVII)
6. Modern Spanish (XVIII-XIX).

Teaching methods

Teaching will take place through lectures, in Spanish, sometimes with the use of ppt or pdf files, but the students' active participation is required, especially in practical activities of the module.
During the course, professors from other Spanish or Italian universities could be invited to give one or two specialized lectures.
Students will also be encouraged to attend the language practice sessions planned within the weekly schedule for their level of competence.

Assessment and Evaluation

GENERAL INFORMATION:
The assessment includes a test on language skills, an oral exam on the module A and, for the 10-ECTS exam, a written exam on the syllabus of the module B.
The overall grade is the result of the test on language skills and of the examination on the syllabus of the module (5 ECTS) or of the two modules (10 ECTS). All parts must be passed successfully.
Prior to the module exam, students will have to pass a test on language; the details are published on the specific web page of “Centro Competenza Lingue”, in the Spanish language section (see: Home > Centri di ricerca e servizio > CCL > Lingue straniere: Spagnolo). The grade obtained in the test on language skills is valid for 18 months, after which the language test must be repeated, before taking the module exam. It is not possible to refuse the mark obtained in the test on language skills, as it is a partial grade. The language test cannot be taken before the relevant module is concluded.

MODULE PROF. M. BIANCHI:
The assessment consists of an oral exam comprising normally three open-ended questions; in addition, during the course, students are expected to prepare a written commentary of a text previously identified with the lecturer.
The exam will be in Spanish and it will test the contents of the entire program of the module.
The score (./30) will depend equally on both the written commentary and on the oral presentation; more specifically, it will evaluate the following aspects:
- the knowledge of linguistic evolution during the studied ages;
- philological skills in analyzing literary texts;
- communication skills in Spanish (coherence, cohesion, clarity, accuracy, propriety and effective style).

Further information

TAKE NOTE: For prof. Bianchi’s module, all of the course texts and ppt or pdf files used during lectures will be published on the E-learning platform (Moodle) of the course.

The DELE Diploma de Español nivel C2 international certificate will exempt students from the language assessment tests, except for the translation test (see Home > Centri di ricerca e servizio > CCL > Lingue straniere: Spagnolo>Riconoscimenti di certificazione).

For the 10-ECTS exam, students are required to take both modules A and B in the same exam session. It is not possible to refuse the score of a single module.
