Prerequisites

Having passed the exam of French literature LMI for students with French
literature in their study plan.

Educational goals

At the end of the course, students will have an acquaintance with the key points of the historical and cultural background to modern and contemporary French literature. In light of the course’s thematic proposal, they will also have acquired transdisciplinary methods for the analysis of literary texts, with specific reference to the interrelations among literature, history and culture.

Course content

Transcultural imaginaries: Assia Djebar’s Writing.
The course aims to provide a cross-cultural view on the French literary landscape, investigating the variegated constellation of postcolonial Algerian literature. In particular, Assia Djebar's work will be analyzed around some crucial thematic nuclei: writing in the language of the other starting from the reflection of Jacques Derrida; the obsession with lost languages; the novel genre at the intersection of autobiography, history, fiction and tradition; historical and cultural memory.

Teaching methods

The course will be delivered in a traditional classroom in french language setting with focus also on interactive dialogue between and with the students.
The participation of students may also be envisaged with the presentation of exposés.

Assessment and Evaluation

Oral exam in french language. The skills requested are:
- Critical readings of the texts proposed by the course (primary and secondary);
- Knowledge of the cultural and literary background to the texts proposed;
- Capacity of students to read all the texts in French and to translate them into Italian.

Further information

The course will take place in the second semester.
On the day of the exam, students are asked to come with books.
In the event of provisions of the competent authority regarding the containment and management of the epidemiological emergency, the teaching may undergo changes with respect to what is stated in the syllabus to bring the course and exams in line with the provisions.
