Gli studenti devono essere già in grado di applicare alcune distinzioni della grammatica 'tradizionale'. Per fare qualche esempio: data una parola in italiano devono saper dire se si tratta di un nome, di un verbo, di una preposizione ecc.; data una frase in italiano devono saper individuare il soggetto sintattico; dato un periodo in italiano, devono saper distinguere la frase principale dalla frase subordinata. Durante il corso saranno predisposti brevi esercizi per rendere consapevoli gli studenti ad individuare eventuali lacune; tale tipo di lacune dovrà essere colmato individualmente.
Al termine del corso lo studente possiede una conoscenza approfondita dei fondamenti teorici e metodologici che ispirano lo studio scientifico del linguaggo e delle lingue. Ciò sosterrà l'acquisizione consapevole delle lingue straniere. Inoltre, lo studente sarà in grado di comprendere e analizzare, sulla base dell'esame di produzioni linguistiche concrete, i fenomeni linguistici in generale e, in particolare, alcune loro variazioni al variare del contesto socio-culturale.
Caratteristiche costitutive del linguaggio umano. Nozioni di fonetica e fonologia. Morfologia e sintassi. Elementi di semantica. Cenno di tipologia Questi argomenti sono trattati nel testo di riferimento 1.
Rapporti tra lingua e società e tra lingua e pensiero. Lingua in uso: pratiche linguistico-culturali diverse. Questi argomenti sono trattati nei testi di riferimento 2 e 3.
La didattica si svolge tramite lezioni frontali. Gli studenti saranno tenuti a partecipare attivamente alle lezioni, anche tramite la piattaforma e-learning, con riflessioni sulla lingua e sull’uso linguistico e con l'analisi di produzioni linguistiche concrete.
La riflessione in aula sarà preceduta dalla lettura autonoma e graduale (secondo le indicazione della docente) di alcuni paragrafi di due capitoli del testo di riferimento 1 (il capitolo 1 e il capitolo 3) e dalla visione autonoma di materiale video indicato dalla docente. Tali attività sono obbligatorie per lo studente frequentante.
Le lezioni frontali sono accompagnate da fogli di materiale preparati dalla docente; i materiali trattano il contenuto dei testi di riferimento, con alcuni approfondimenti. I fogli di materiale saranno di norma resi disponibili prima di ogni lezione sulla piattaforma e-learning dell'Università. Gli studenti frequentanti potranno accedere alla pagina e-learning del corso tramite parola chiave fornita durante la prima lezione.
Gli studenti potranno usufruire di un servizio di tutorato a distanza dedicato a tutti gli insegnamenti appartenenti al settore "Glottologia e linguistica" del primo anno del corso degli studi.
L’esame verifica sia la conoscenza delle nozioni teoriche sia la capacità di applicarle a casi concreti di produzione linguistica.
L’esame è in forma scritta informatizzata.
Esame scritto: 16 domande chiuse/a scelta multipla e aperte relative sia alle nozioni teoriche sia alla loro applicazione; ogni risposta completa e corretta vale 2 punti; risposte completamente errate o non pertinenti alle due domande relative ai testi di riferimento 2 e 3 saranno valutate negativamente (-1/30 ciascuna). Il punteggio massimo totale di 32 punti corrisponde alla votazione di 30 e lode/30. La durata dell’esame scritto è di 60 minuti.
L’esito della prova è pubblicato sul libretto elettronico dello studente; lo studente può rifiutare il voto uguale o superiore a 18/30 entro due giorni dalla data di pubblicazione.
Una simulazione dell'esame sarà pubblicata sulla piattaforma e-learning.

Qualora l'insegnamento venisse impartito in modalità mista o a distanza potranno essere introdotte modifiche rispetto a quanto dichiarato nel syllabus per rendere il corso e gli esami fruibili anche secondo queste modalità.
Students must be able to apply basic grammatical distinctions. For ex. they are required to be able to classify Italian words into parts of speech (noun, verb, preposition, etc.). They must be able to find the subject of an Italian clause or to distinguish a main clause from a dependent clause. During the course, short exercises will be administered to help students become aware of any gaps; this kind of gaps will have to be filled individually.
By the end of the course students will gain an understanding of the theoretical and methodological principles leading the scientific study of language. This understanding will promote their second language acquisition process.
Students will be able to analyze linguistic data in different domains, to compare linguistic data collected in different contexts and will gain a first grasp of language variation according to socio-cultural differences.
Properties of language. Notions of phonetics and phonology. Word- and clause-structure. Elements of semantics. Typology. These topics are dealt with in text 1.
Relationship between language and society and language and thought. Language in discourse and cultural differences. These topics are dealt with in texts 2 e 3.
Lectures. Compulsory activities performed by attending students: Analysis of linguistic data both on the e-learning platform and in classsroom and classroom discussion on the use of language as cultural practice.
In preparation for classroom/e-learning activities students will be required to read some sections of chapter 1 and chapter 3, textbook 1, and to watch videos at home.
Lectures are accompanied by hand-outs prepared by the teacher. The hand-outs deal with the same content of the textbooks. Students are asked to download the hand-outs from the e-learning platform.
The password to have access to the course on the e-learning platform will be delivered during the first class of the course.
Students will be able to take advantage of a distance tutoring service dedicated to all the first year courses in the field "Historical and General Linguistics".
The test assesses both the knowledge of theoretical notions and the ability to apply them to linguistic data.
The exam is a written test administered through a Learning Management System.
Written test: 16 open-ended or multiple choice/close-ended questions on theoretical notions and on analysis of linguistic data. Each correct and complete answer scores 2 points. Completely incorrect or irrelevant answers to the two questions relating to reference texts 2 and 3 will be evaluated negatively (-1/30 each). A maximum total score of 32 points is equal to 30/30 cum laude.
The time allowed is 60 minutes.
The results of the written exam will be published on the exam transcripts of the student. Student may reject their mark within the second day from the date of publication.
A simulation of the exam will be published on the e-learning platfor.
