Educational goals

The course aims at providing basic knowledge on human body modeling for engineering and medical applications according to a hierarchical approach. The student learns how to use tools for the acquisition of the geometry of the whole body, or of anatomical districts, using 3D scanning systems and creates geometric models from DICOM diagnostic images obtained, for instance, from CT or MRI. The student is also capable of acquiring the movement of the human body, or a part of it, through Motion Capture solutions and processing the data thus obtained to perform assessment and monitoring of patients with different motor deficiencies. The student acquires the ability to assess the ergonomics (in terms of visibility, reachability, comfort, etc.) of a product or workplace by using commercial solutions for modeling and simulating the behavior of the human body.

Course content

Introduction to the modeling of human body. Types of human body models, classification based on industrial, medical and entertainment applications. Modeling and simulation tools for the behavior of the human body and of individual anatomical districts. Three-dimensional geometric reconstruction starting from 3D scans and / or diagnostic images. Notes and case studies on the design of custom-fit components, such as internal and external prostheses and orthoses. HW and SW solutions for Motion Capture in the medical, engineering and sports fields. Acquisition and processing of data on the movement of the human body. Virtual ergonomics and occupational medicine.

Teaching methods

The teaching will take place through lectures and guided practical exercises for the use of 3D modeling systems of the human body and simulation. The exercises will be carried out so as to allow the student to work with increasing autonomy but with constant supervision and support. Laboratory exercises are planned in which the student will use three-dimensional scanning systems and tools to capture the motion of the human body.

Assessment and Evaluation

The exam consists of two parts to be taken in the same day:
1. realization and presentation of a project-work to be carried out in a group (max 3 people) on a pre-established theme (80% of the final grade)
2. oral examination on the contents of the lectures (20% of the final grade)
