No mandatory pre courses
The module aims to provide the knowledge necessary to understand the economic characteristics of the transport industry; understand the dynamics of travel demand and the relationship between preferences, modal choice and the effects on the network and on the traffic flows generated.
The student acquires the following skills: They can calculate the direct and indirect economic impacts of new infrastructural initiatives using the I-O tables, They can estimate flows matrices by source and destination, calculate the probabilities that a transport alternative is chosen, assign traffic flows on non-complex networks based on deterministic assumptions. The course contributes to the educational objectives of the course in particular as regards the area of knowledge of markets and services, Understanding and evaluation of the economic and strategic aspects of business decisions.
The course consists of three macro educational areas
I) the first teaching area is dedicated to the understanding of aspects related to mobility and transport systems.
introduction of transport system and major issues. notions of economic geography, relation between location choices – economic development and transport infrastructure
Analysis of the peculiarities of transport and impact on the cost structure and pricing techniques
Analysis of the positive externalities of transport systems and estimation methodologies
II) The second teaching area is the estimation models that can explain and forecasrt demand of mobility and passengers choices.
Demand estimation methods and analysis of origin and destination flow matrix (O & D)
Passenger choice models and analysis of choices in presence of different modes of transport
III) The third teaching area is dedicated to the analysis of the structure of the aviation sector and in particular to the calculation and the role of connectivity

Teaching will take place through lectures and exercises, with particular attention to the students interaction, discussing with them the modalities of application to real cases. Particular effort is dedicated to the use of the methods discussed in the understanding of the mobility choices that are observed on a daily basis
There are 2 possible alternative option (accessible by everyone)
1) The first modality includes:
- The development of a Project carried out in groups ranging from 2 to 5 students.
- Written exam consisting typically of 6 closed-ended question, 1 open-answer question, 1 numerical exercise. The written test time is 2h
2) Alternatively, only the written exam can be carried out:
In this case, the written exam is typically made up of 6 closed-ended question, 2 open-answer question, 3 numerical exercises. The written test is 2h 30min
During the course are also required to perform a short group assignment. For those not attending or that can not carry out the assignment during the written exam they will answer to an additional integration consisting of 2 closed-answer questions and 1 open-ended questions
The two alternative exams options are set up with the target of generating the same level of complexity
If the course will be taught by using mixed traditional and distance learning there will be changes compared to the syllabus in order to accommodate such as structure
