Prerequisites

Knowledge of the operating dynamics of production systems, acquired in mechanical plant course or alternatively in courses dealing with the organization and management of industrial plants.

Educational goals

Students will acquire advanced knowledge on criteria and methodologies that govern the selection, design and construction of smart industrial production factories. They are able to understand the principles of operating of fundamental elements that concern advanced technological applications for manufacturing systems. In addition, they are able to develop conceptual schemes to depict a production plant, and to create operating models through the use of appropriate simulation languages. They also acquire the ability to address a complex problem through teamwork.

Course content

After presenting the evolution of manufacturing systems and Industry 4.0 foundations, the course introduces the principles of design of smart manufacturing systems (production and assembly) and smart logistics systems (warehousing, materials handling), directed to the creation of digital twin through the use of discrete-event simulation. In addition, the course involves the development of maintenance planning, human-machine interaction in smart production systems Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for production processes control.

Teaching methods

The course is structured into theoretical lectures (24 hours) and a laboratory application (24 hours). aimed at improving technical and communication skills. In particular, students will work in team to develop a project related to advanced and smart production systems to obtain attended results. Meetings with the teacher will address project aims, theoretical background and specific knowledge related to the project activities. Project tutoring will be provided continuously during the entire duration of the project. Organized guided tours to local manufacturing companies and invited speeches from industrial practitioners are also planned to give students the opportunity to experience in a real context the competences achieved during their class, as well as to share their opinions, ideas and concerns with qualified industrial practitioners.

Assessment and Evaluation

Evaluation of the project results, knowledge acquired and skills will be evaluated at the end of each project on the basis of a public presentation by each project team.
