Al termine del corso lo studente possiede una conoscenza approfondita dei fondamenti teorici e metodologici che ispirano lo studio scientifico del linguaggio e delle lingue. Questa conoscenza è la base per sviluppare competenze linguistiche adatte a comprendere e a creare prodotti comunicativi di differenti ambiti.
“Introduzione alla linguistica”
Il corso si propone di fornire le nozioni di base di linguistica che permettano di cogliere il funzionamento del linguaggio umano nel contesto storico e sociale.
Tra i principali argomenti affrontati nell’ambito del corso:
- Le proprietà distintive del linguaggio umano e, dunque, delle lingue: onnipotenza semantica, arbitrarietà, doppia articolazione, produttività, ricorsività, ecc.
- La nozione di segno linguistico;
- Fonetica e fonologia: le nozioni di fono e fonema, la differenza tra vocali e consonanti, la classificazione di vocali e consonanti, la nozione di coppia minima, la trascrizione fonetica e impiego dell’alfabeto fonetico internazionale (IPA);
- Morfologia: la nozione di morfema, la nozione di parola, la sua problematicità, la sua profonda variabilità interlinguistica;
- Sintassi: frasi semplici e complesse; ordini marcati dell’Italiano;
- Semantica: rapporti di significato tra lessemi, prestiti semantici e calchi;
- Pragmatica: anafora e deissi, funzioni del linguaggio, atti linguistici;
- Cenni di tipologia linguistica, principalmente morfologica e sintattica, universali linguistici.
Il corso si svolgerà tramite lezioni frontali ed esercitazioni, ma con un'attenzione particolare al confronto e al dialogo diretto con gli studenti, che saranno stimolati a riconoscere le possibilità di applicare le nozioni presentate durante le lezioni all’analisi della realtà che li circonda.
Le lezioni saranno integrate da 9 ore di esercitazioni di natura pratico-applicativa, volte a preparare gli studenti (frequentanti e non) al sostenimento della prova d’esame. Nell’area e-learning del corso saranno messi a disposizione degli studenti esercizi corredati di soluzioni attraverso i quali gli studenti (frequentanti e non) avranno la possibilità di prepararsi in modo autonomo e di testare la propria preparazione.
La verifica dell’apprendimento avviene attraverso una prova scritta oppure una prova orale e la valutazione viene espressa in trentesimi.
Dal punto di vista dei contenuti, tra le due modalità di verifica non vi è alcuna differenza. Per gli studenti dell’anno in corso, cinque degli 8 appelli d’esame previsti nell’arco dell’anno accademico (ovvero, gli appelli di giugno, luglio e settembre) saranno in forma scritta, mentre gli altri tre saranno in forma orale. Lo studente potrà scegliere la modalità di esame che preferisce. Sia la prova scritta, sia la prova orale esauriscono l’esame e portano al conseguimento di 12 cfu. Il voto ottenuto può essere accettato o rifiutato a discrezione dello studente, ma si tratta di un voto definitivo, che non presuppone il superamento di altre prove. Nel corso della prova d’esame (sia essa scritta oppure orale) allo studente verrà chiesto di risolvere esercizi simili a quelli affrontati durante le esercitazioni.
1) Gli studenti devono portare con sé a lezione il testo di riferimento indicato nel programma già dalla prima lezione.
2) Il programma di studio è lo stesso anche per gli STUDENTI NON FREQUENTANTI.
3) Agli studenti che ritengano necessario un consolidamento delle nozioni di grammatica italiana (soprattutto per quanto riguarda la sintassi) e non possiedano un testo pertinente consigliamo di utilizzare il testo Trifone, Pietro e Massimo Palermo 2020, “Grammatica italiana di base. Quarta edizione con esercizi.”, Zanichelli, svolgendo anche gli esercizi di autoverifica sul sito dell’editore.
4) Qualora l'insegnamento venisse impartito in modalità mista o a distanza, potranno essere introdotte modifiche rispetto alle presenti indicazioni per adeguare il corso, le esercitazioni e gli esami anche a queste modalità. Le informazioni relative saranno fornite sull’area e-learning del corso.
5) TUTTI GLI STUDENTI sono caldamente invitati a svolgere gli esercizi riguardanti le nozioni di base di Linguistica disponibili sul sito della casa editrice del testo 1 all’indirizzo internet: http://www.utetuniversita.it/berruto
6) TUTTI GLI STUDENTI sono tenuti a consultare periodicamente l’area e-learning del corso e a scaricare i materiali indicati (esempi di prova d’esame, materiali utili per lo studio).

The students will be able to attain a comprehensive knowledge of the main theoretical and methodological principles underlying the scientific study of the world’s languages. This knowledge represents the first step towards the development of the linguistic competences required in order to interpret and produce communication in different contexts.
“Introduction to Linguistics”
The course aims to provide basic linguistic concepts which enable students to understand the functioning of the human language in both its historical and social contexts.
Main topics discussed during the lessons:
- properties of the human languages: semantic omnipotence, arbitrariness, double articulation, productivity, etc.
- Main features of language signs;
- Phonetics and phonology: phones phonemes, consonant and vowel sounds, minimal pairs, use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA);
- Morphology: word formation processes and types of morphemes, interlinguistic differences and similarities;
- Syntax: simple and complex sentences; Italian marked word orders;
- Semantics: the lexicon, semantic relationships among words, loanwords and semantic calques;
- Pragmatics: anaphora and deixis, functions of language, speech acts;
- Introduction to typological linguistics and universals.
The course entails both frontal lectures and exercise sections; students will be invited to use their questions to guide the teaching process and to appreciate the possibility to apply the theoretical notions to the analysis of the reality surrounding them. There will be 9 hours of exercise sections aimed at increasing the students’ chances to pass the final exam, irrespective of whether they are able to attend the lessons or not. Students are warmly recommended to download from the e-learning page of the course a PDF file containing a few exercises focusing on applied principles. The exercises will be discussed during the exercise sections, but exercise keys will be available (on the same e-learning site of the course) for (non)attending students.
The assessment will be either in written or in spoken form. As far as the contents are concerned, both the assessment forms are equivalent. In five out of eight exam sessions, the assessment will be in written form (i.e. the June, July and September exam sessions), whereas in the remaining three sessions the exam will be in oral form. Students are invited to choose the assessment form that best suits them and their needs. The final mark can be either accepted or rejected by the single student, but does not entail any other assessment test. Both the written and oral test involve theoretical questions and exercises similar to those discussed during the training practice hours mentioned in the previous paragraph.
The written test (lasting 45 minutes) entails 9 questions and exercises concerning the basic principles of Linguistics. Each answer will earn from 0 to 2 points.
To pass the entire integrated course of General Linguistics is necessary to pass the tests of both the Basic Linguistics and Sociolinguistics parts in the same exam session. Yet, in January-February 2022 an intermediate test concerning the basic principles of Linguistics will be available to all students. This written test consists of 9 questions and Linguistics exercises. Each correct answer will earn 2 points; in order to pass the text it is necessary to earn 10 points out of 18. The points obtained in this test will contribute to the final mark for the entire course and will be valid only for the current academic year (i.e., until March 2023).
1) ALL THE STUDENTS attending the lessons are expected to bring with them the text 1 (Berruto / Cerruti 2017).
2) NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS should follow the same program as those attending the lessons.
3) Students who need to strengthen their knowledge of the Italian grammar (especially as far as syntactic skills are concerned) are invited to consult the following text: Trifone, Pietro e Massimo Palermo 2020, "Grammatica italiana di base. Quarta edizione con esercizi...", Zanichelli. The self-assessment exercises available on the publisher's website are also warmly recommended.
4) If the course will be taught in a blended or in a distance learning form, these guidelines may undergo a few changes in order to adapt the course, the exercises and the assessment to these forms. Students are invited to consult the e-learning area of the course for details on all these adjustments.
5) ALL STUDENTS are warmly recommended to solve the exercises on basic Linguistics principles which can be downloaded free of charge from the website of the publisher of text 1: http://www.utetuniversita.it/berruto
6) ALL THE STUDENTS are expected to consult on a regular basis the e-learning area of the course and download the materials there available (example tests, useful materials and exercises, and so on).
