Educational goals

At the end of the course the student should have acquired :
a) the capacity to distinguish and assess the various personality disorders based on DSM-5 and PDM-2 trough the familiarization with psychodiagnostics interview and questionnaires
b) the capacity to understand and evaluate dissociation as a disorder of integration (Scalabrini) and dissociation as different from repression (Mucci), its association with disorganized attachment (Liotti) and the effects of trauma beyond diagnosis (Mucci & Scalabrini)
c) a basic knowledge on the state of the art of the relevance of self and others (relatedness) assessment for diagnosis of personality disorders and their neuroscientific correlates
d) a basic knowledge of how to assess personality disorder and organization trough the structural interview (Kernberg)
e) a basic knowledge on Transference focused psychotherapy(TFP), devised by Otto Kernberg
f) a basic knowledge of how to assess Mentalization
g) a basic knowledge on Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT), devised by Peter Fonagy

Course content

Psychodynamic diagnosis of personality disorders and personality organization according to DSM-5 and PDM-2. Difference between a categorical and a dimensional approach in diagnosis of personality through the use of interviews and questionnaires. Evaluation of attachment, effects of traumatic experiences, levels of dissociation in different personality disorders following the theories of Allan Schore, Giovanni Liotti, Philip Bromberg and Clara Mucci. Assessment of personality trough the structural clinical interview (Kernberg). Neuroscientific and psychodynamics advances in the development and assessment of self and relatedness. Theory and treatments for personality disorders with a special emphasis on Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP, Kernberg) and Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT, Fonagy).

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures and discussions on the material assigned. Case examples will be analyzed to develop a psychodiagnostics mind using different assessment tools to formulate diagnose and plan interventions.

Assessment and Evaluation

The evaluation will take place through an oral exam which should evaluate the actual understanding of the material read, a critical discussion of what had been learned and the acquisition of the educational goals predicted. Thre is no in-between exam before the end of the course.
A minimum pass is 18/30, the maximum score is 30/30 cum laude.

Erasmus students should contact the instructor of the course as soon as possible to prepare an appropriate program.
If the course is taught in blended or distance learning modes, there will be possible changes to make the lessons and the exams more suitable for these learning modes.
In the event of provisions by the competent authorities regarding containment, respect and management of the epidemiological emergency, the teaching could undergo changes to what is declared in the syllabus to make the course and exams in line with what is provided.
