Educational goals

At the end of the course, the student is aware of the multidimensionality of bilingualism and its advantages, with particular but not exclusive reference to early bilingualism. He/she will be able to evaluate his/her own multilingual competence in its various aspects and degrees, as indicated in the Companion Volume to the CEFR, and to apply this evaluation, with the necessary means, to others as well.
He/she knows the principles of Inclusive Linguistic Education and Plural Approaches to Languages, outlined in the CARAP, as well as the underlying theoretical-methodological approaches. He/she is able to critically discuss educational proposals for the advancement of multilingual competence.

Course content

Bi-/multilingualism as a resource and as a right. Dimensions, perspectives, advantages of bi-/multilingualism. European documents and the "Italian way" of plurilingual Language Education. CARAP and plurilingual Competence in the Companion Volume to the CEFR. The pluralistic approaches: DIL, Intercomprehension, CLIL, translanguaging, éveil aux langues.

Teaching methods

Special attention will be given to discussions and activities with and among the participants.
Complementary inputs and activities could be provided via Moodle and other ICTs.

The course is completed through an oral exam. A positive evaluation
ranges from 18/30 to 30 (evt. "cum laude")/30.
The evaluation criteria encompass: accuracy in concepts and
terminology; extension and depth of proficiency of concepts and of
conceptual links; implications for language learning and teaching.
