Prerequisites

Knowledge of German Language equal to level B2+ (for LM I) or C1 (for LM II).

Educational goals

At the end of the course students have acquired – at metalinguistic and disciplinary level - methodological approaches for the linguistic analysis of the literary texts taken into consideration, also from a translator's point of view. Special attention will be given to the pragmatic and idiomatic sphere of German.
Furthermore students will have deepened and improved their translation skills and competences in the four communication abilities of the European Framework of Reference: at C1 level for LM I, at C1+ level (writing and oral production) and at C2 level (oral and written comprehension) for LM II.

Course content

During the course we will examine phenomena of register variation, the use of modal expressions, phraseology and idiomaticity in novels of modern and contemporary German literature as well as related challenges for translation. The analysis of literary texts regularly includes the comparison between source text and translation.
The contents of the AAL level C1 (German language LM I) and C1+/C2 (German language LM II) are indicated analytically on the website of the Language Competence Centre of the University in the German section.

Teaching methods

Lectures in German and group work. All activities foresee active participation of students, possibly also through short oral presentations. For information on language training activities (AAL) pls. have a look at the website of the Centro Competenza Lingue, in the German language section.

Assessment and Evaluation

1. Disciplinary knowledge (related to the official course): oral exam in German. Students will have to answer questions on the topics discussed and develop analyses on text and translation, similar to those carried out during the course. Individual or group work requested during the course contributes to the final evaluation. Written tests of linguistic abilities (s. point 2) have to be successfully concluded prior to the oral exam.
2. Communicative skills (written tests of linguistic abilities): LM I: writing and translation German-Italian (= versione); LM II: translation of academic texts Italian-German The final mark, expressed in thirtieths, is based on evaluation of disciplinary knowledge related to the official course but will take into account also communicative skills of the required level (see educational goals).
